JOEY & RORY GET RADIO TO PLAY THAT SONG!
(By: Bessie Sorge)

Joey & Rory are a husband and wife duo featuring Rory Lee Feek and Joey Martin Feek.  When the two met at the Nashville hotspot Blue Bird Café, a uniquely entertaining creation had formed with a sultry country songstress and comedic farmboy songwriter. “He was doing a songwriter’s night, and I sat there and listened to him sing, and listened to his songs, and said to myself, ‘that’s the man I want to spend the rest of my life with someday,’” Joey said recalling the night they met.  “I was chasing a dream of being a songwriter and she was chasing her dream of being a singer,” Rory adds. “It’s like when two separate dreams collide, this is sort of the product of it, and it’s bigger than we imagined.”  What a perfect collision they have made.

Getting their start on the popular television series Can You Duet helped catapult Joey & Rory into country music stardom.  Their appearance on the show even had Naomi Judd saying that “the fans are going to eat you up,” but what Naomi left out is that the industry would too.  Shortly after their time on Can You Duet came to an end, the duo was quickly grabbed up by Overstock.com to be featured in a series of nationally televised commercials.  It wasn’t long before the duo signed a record contract.  “We met the folks at Vanguard and they were super nice,” Rory tells us.  “We’re really independent minded, so we really wanted to go with an indie label.  Kevin Welk and all those guys have been just dead on with everything that they’ve done.”

Known for penning most of the couple’s songs, seven of which appear on their debut album “Life Of A Song,” Rory understands the complexity of making it as a songwriter in Nashville.  Having written over 195 songs according to the ASCAP website during the past 15 years, less than 10% of his songs have been recorded outside of their duo.  You may have heard some of his songs being performed by some of finest artists country music has to offer, including Kenny Chesney, John Michael Montgomery, Oak Ridge Boys, Mark Wills, Collin Raye, and most recently Blake Shelton’s charting hit single “Some Beach.”  “I know how hard it is to get songs recorded,” Rory confessed to us.  “So it’s important that we don’t just record our own songs.”

Hollywood Teen’Zine went backstage before Joey & Rory’s Riverfront performance where they told us about their upcoming single “Just Say Goodbye,” which will be released to radio next month.  This new song is one that hits really close to home for Joey who lost her brother in a car accident about 15 years ago.  “You just never know when someone you love is going to leave you, and you’re always forever affected by that.  I never really got to tell him goodbye,” Joey speaks about the accident and the influence it held over this next song. “We came up with this song, and it took a little while to finish, but it’s just one of those (songs) for everyone who’s lost somebody, and for those people who are having a hard time because they didn’t get tell them goodbye.”

So, what is Joey & Rory’s favorite part about this whole process?  “I love going in the studio, and we have such a fantastic producer (Carl Jackson),” Joey admits.  “But, I love coming out here and playing.  I love performing and getting to connect with the audience and the fans, and that’s why we do what we do.”

Appearing for the first time at this year’s CMA Music Festival was quite an honor to Joey & Rory who were really excited about getting up on stage at the Riverfront.  “We feel so blessed to be on a big ole stage like that,” Joey tells us.  “I’m looking over there at Darryl Worley singing, he’s on the stage and on the monitors and everything else, so that’s pretty awesome.”  Joey smiles and looks at Rory and says, “We’re fixin’ to be up there, Baby.”  The show was a huge hit with the audience who were singing along to tunes like “Cheater, Cheater” and “Play That Song.”  Before they went on stage Joey told us that “Rory’s going come up with some funny songs and bring out his charm,” and that he did.  They had the audience filled with laughter throughout the majority of their set.
