Review by JAM

"I like to move it move it, I like to move it move it…"

What makes the Madagascar movies so popular is not the fun colors or special animated effects, but rather its the ability of these characters making our belly cramp from laughter pains and the catchy soundtrack that moves along with the upbeat tempo of the film.  Filled with high energy songs along with mixed in comedic stylings of King Julian “rocking” on some classic covers, the Madagascar soundtrack perfectly parallels the movie, which is voiced by comedic powerhouses Ben Stiller as Alex the Lion, Chris Rock as Marty the Zebra, David Schwimmer as Melman the Giraffe, and Jada Pinkett as Gloria the Hippo trying to make it home to New York once again.

From Katy Perry’s energetic “Firework” to King Julian’s eclectic “Wannabe”, there’s something for everyone on this soundtrack.  There are amazing instrumental scored pieces by Hans Zimmer that appeal to those interested in the musical tie-ins within a movie, with the highlight being “Rescue Stefano”, a heroic piece that flows with calmness and action in a delightful dance of melody and harmony.  There are the dance music retooled versions of Wannabe, Gonna Make You Sweat, and Hot in Herre as voiced by the aforementioned Cohen which are fun in their simplicity and retooled to fit the movie well.  Lyrics are changed to include inside jokes and clean up songs that may have had more inappropriate language before, but it enhances the ties to the soundtrack rather than weakening the overall effect.  In fact, Wannabe ends up being a personal favorite as the retooled version of the Spice Girls hit single ends up being hilarious as sung by a comedic self-proclaimed king of the lemurs.  Finally, throw in the always awesome Katy Perry and her self-empowerment ballad Firework that works well with a search for identity and the quest for the way home.

The new Madagascar soundtrack is a dance-filled extravaganza that gives you the feeling of a circus atmosphere while building you up during this search for what truly matters most.  So take home a copy of this crazy Afro-Circus filled soundtrack, and check out the movie in theaters now for a feel good extravaganza of life and friendship!
