There are several changes in store for the second season of the hit action series The Troop, which premieres this afternoon on Nickelodeon.   The biggest change is the addition of two new cast members, Malese Jow as Cadence Nash and Matt Shively as Kirby Bancroft-Cadworth III, who will join stars Gage Golightly and Nick Purcel this season on the show.

In the first season of the show we were introduced to Jake (Nick Purcell), a typical teenager struggling through adolescence, who suddenly discovers a whole new existence when school counselor Mr. Stockley (John Marshall Jones) reveals that he unknowingly aced an aptitude test for admittance into this secret, underground Troop - a centuries-old, international society that protects the world from the supernatural beings that walk among us.  Jake is accompanied by smart, strong and pretty Hayley (Gage Golightly) and socially-challenged paranormal expert Felix who battle supernatural disturbances like a tree monster out to seek revenge on the student council or a giant Mongolian worm attack on the senior dance.

In the second season premiere episode viewers will witness a memorable introduction from a new character - the fearless, confident and edgy femme fatale Cadence Nash.  In the season opener “The Triangle,” Jake and Hayley are crushing on each other until Cadence comes in and breaks it up.  Meanwhile, Felix (David Del Rio) is invited to join D.O.R. K., an exclusive school for the super intelligent.

We sat down with Malese Jow, the newest cast member of the series, to get the scoop on what YOU can expect in the all-new premiere episode airing this afternoon on Nickelodeon!

I was just reading on Twitter this morning that you are back home in Oklahoma?

I am - I just got in last night.

Now that your career has taken off these past few years, how does it feel to be able to escape and go back home for a little down time with your friends and family?

It's very nice.  I always try, whenever I do have some down time, to spend it with family because family is so important.

For the fans who have followed you throughout your career and might not have had the opportunity to catch an episode of The Troop yet, can you summarize what the series is about?

The Troop is all about action and all about monsters.  It's about a group of kids who fight monsters in their town of Lakewood, so that is exciting.  Season 2, like I have been telling everyone,  is new in all aspects; the look is different, there are two new characters - myself and Matt Shively, who comes in mid-season - there are different situations and the monsters look different.  People are going to be getting a whole new Troop. It's almost as if you are watching a whole new show.  My character Cadence, she shows up on a motorcycle in slow motion and the rest is history [laughs].  That kind of sets the tone for my character.  She's very edgy and very confident, and she immediately starts stirring things up for our main characters.

In the preview clips for the premiere it shows that Cadence's confidence may ruffle a few feathers with the main characters this season.  Can you tell us a little about what fans can expect to see from her relationships with the other characters on the show?

I think she tries to push Hayley's buttons, that's for sure.  She sets her eyes upon Jake and she kind of gets right in the middle of them two, which is unfortunate, and that goes on for a little while.  Everyone's just going to have to watch the show to see how those relationships evolve, because it really is a cool organic progression and possibly a friendship.

You go from playing a vampire on The Vampire Diaries to now joining The Troop where everyone is fighting off monsters.  Do you particularly like playing this type of character?

It seems to be a recurring theme in my life, but I am totally okay with it.  I love playing the tough girl - I'm all about female empowerment and stuff like that. Cadence and Anna definitely have a lot of similarities, they both are really serious but yet there is a heart deep down inside - it's just going to take a few episodes of a show to bring it out.  They are both so fun to play and I love playing confident female characters.  I mean, put me in a leather jacket and I am good to go.  And, actually, the same goes for my character that I just played on Big Time Rush [laughs].  So there you go, there's another one [laughs].

Joining the cast of a show in its second season is almost like a kid who changes their school mid-semester - were you nervous at all taking on this role?

I was definitely nervous.  It's always nerve-wracking knowing that these people have already spent 26 episodes together.  But I had gone in a few times reading for the role - I was reading with Gage and reading with Tommy, the creator of the show, and some of the producers.  Once we got down to the screen test they were talking to me about Canada and they were all so excited because by that time we kind of figured out that I would be a part of the show.  Everyone was so welcoming and they were so excited to have me there, which is a great feeling. I was excited to be a part of their family.  We were all in Canada having a great time for a few months.

You traveled to Georgia to shoot The Vampire Diaries and to Canada to shoot The Troop - do you enjoy going on location for work?

I know, I have been all over the place.  I personally love being on location because you get to primarily focus on work and the people around you.  When you're in L.A. you're distracted about everything else going on and what you can do when you get off set, but when you are on location pretty much the only people you know for those first couple of weeks are your cast and crew.  I love that you kind of instantly bond even more than you would in L.A.  So, I love being on location, staying in hotels, eating food and meeting new people. I feel like it has been a great experience.

What has been your favorite moment so far filming The Troop?

There are a few.  We have so many gags and it's such a funny show.  I just love Candace's story arc.  People are going to have to watch to see but I feel like she makes a great transformation throughout the show.  She deals with a lot, but yet she handles it so well and seeing everyone around her react to it and accepting her.  I feel like there are a lot of lessons to be learned in this season of The Troop that can really inspire kids and I can't wait for everyone to see it.

In the promo that I saw for the season premiere you had the best line, "Tomorrow I want a peach!"  How did you keep your composure through that?

[laughs] Take that and I am the exact opposite as a person. So I really had to dig deep (for that scene).  I had never talked to someone in that way.  That kid was so cool, his name was Apple Boy in the script, which I thought was hilarious Cadence got an "apple boy".  Like I said, that beginning scene sets the whole tone for Cadence.  I feel like the show needed her as far as someone who is tough and possible and personally threatening to the main characters.

Matt Shively recently talked about how close the cast became and that everyone would hang out together outside of work.  What are some of the things the cast did together outside of filming the show?

Gage and I, we had a movie night and there was actually a meteor shower going on so we had a sleepover and we slept outside to possibly see the meteor shower.  Unfortunately, we didn't see it and I got really sick the next day with a cold.  So, kids don't do that - just letting you know! [laughs]  But we did have some great moments off set.  Matt and I shared millions and millions of inside jokes and laughs.  Nick Purcell and I bonded over country music.  All of those kids are so special to me in different ways.  I think we had great chemistry all together and individually.

Ashley Argota guest starring in The Troop!

Are there any cool guest stars that we can look forward to seeing on the show this season?

Most definitely.  In August you are going to see all of our amazing guest stars that we were so fortunate to have.  We got to have Ashley Argota (on the show).  The episode she is involved in is one of my personal favorites.  That was so much fun.  My whole episode was with her and Matt Shively, and I feel like us three had a great story in that.  We have Daniella Monet, who is a sweetheart, Noah Monk and Cymphonique.  So you're going to see a lot of familiar faces in August on The Troop so tune in!
