ADAM HICKS FEELS DISNEY HAS RAISED THE BAR ON MADE-FOR-TELEVISION MOVIES WITH LEMONADE MOUTH
By: Lauren Pinney

According to Adam Hicks, Disney has raised the bar on made-for-television movies with the release of Lemonade Mouth.  The movie follows five teenagers who happen to land themselves in detention and create a band after uncovering their shared talent and love for music.  The five become a powerful force as they join together to not only share their music but also their message through song.  Fueled with their desire to be heard and to stand up for themselves against their world of bullies and doubters, the band of five embark on a journey that took their message much farther than they thought it would go.  Lemonade Mouth is not only sure to be a banging collaboration of music and drama, but also a powerful message to all kids and teenagers that your voice can be heard! Check out our interview with young hollywood triple-threat Adam Hicks as he gives more insight into this new Disney musical adventure.

What do you think the main message of this story is?  We were able to put these words in to a script and bring them to life in ways that kids can know that they can be heard and that their voice matters!

Can you tell us about your character and how you play into the band?  My character is Wen, he plays the piano for lemonade mouth and he also rap. He is chill and relaxed and more reserved character.  He is very musically inclined and loves music! It was a big transition (for me) coming from a character like on Zeke & Luther who is more of a zany, outrageous character and then jumping into Wen.  It’s like I had to really made a transition in such a dramatic state, and jumping into this character was definitely a good change and I enjoyed it a lot.

Would you say that you are more like your character on Zeke & Luther or more like Wen on Lemonade Mouth? I definitely feel like I put a lot of Adam Hicks into Wen as far as music goes.  I got to write three songs for the film which was awesome!  Mixing my music talents and my acting into one project I feel like was the ultimate process.

On Zeke & Luther you get to combine your passion for skateboarding with your character, what was it like getting to mix your love for music into this role?  It was incredible! Being on stage and reciting your own lyrics and just having people vibe out to you and the performances were incredible!  In the Madison Square Garden performance, my dad compared it to a Rolling Stones concert. We would just rock out! I really feel like they picked the perfect people. Not a lot of people know that Lemonade Mouth is a band on screen and off screen.  Everyone is musically inclined and plays their instruments, everyone can sing and dance. I feel like Disney really picked musicians who were actors.

Which came first for you the music or acting?  Professionally…acting, I have been acting for eleven years, but music I have been doing my whole life.  Like in the fourth grade we had this talent show and I wrote this rap and went on stage and performed it in front of my whole school. I have just been writing music, I have a crate full of songs and actually before I booked Lemonade mouth, Disney contacted me and wanted me to do music for the movie Lemonade Mouth, and then I booked Wen on top of that.  I got to write for three songs, "Determinate," "High Wire" and "Break Through."

What was the music creating process for the cast?  It was amazing for me from growing up recording in garages on laptops to these studios which were incredible!  The process for me was to record the first track, Determinate, before we left for New Mexico, where we filmed the movie. With the writing process they would give us the topic and give you an idea of where they want you to go and then you kind of just wing it and come up with your own flavor and style that you want to bring to the song.  As far as molding as a band, Christopher Scott, he’s the choreographer, and we actually went out to New Mexico two weeks before we started filming and he molded us into this band.  We would do mad rehearsals daily and he was very good at understanding your character and bringing your character out.  I really felt like he helped that process of becoming a band.

Did you write your music to fit the type of music you listen to?  Yah I get inspired kind of spur of the moment.  I have a lot of motivations as far as musical people. I really feel like this was high energy like with "Determinate" and I just wanted to create like a fast rap and break it up and show my fans another side of Adam Hicks.

What was your song?  Probably "Break Through" because it was the Madison Square Garden performance.  It was incredible, there were like 12 dancers, and a huge stage, slides and 75ft. monitors, cameras that would come into your face when you were performing.  They hired these fans and they had smoke that would go off, and even though they were hired fans you could tell that they were rocking out with us.

What was it like working with the cast and were there any funny moments on set?  The cast was amazing, I feel like they picked the perfect characters.  We became really good friends.  We used to do this freeze thing where one person would be talking and they would say like a key phrase and then everyone would just freeze for like 10 minutes and everyone would be looking at us.  We kind of did it on camera a couple of times and it threw people off. We did a lot of stuff off camera like back at the hotel we bought $500 worth of water guns and had this huge water gun fight outside of the hotel.  We would take trips to Santa Fe and just like jam out it our rooms. It made us connect as a real band.

Did you have nick names for each other?  Everyone calls me A-sizzle.  Everyone kind of got their own nickname like smuffin and A-sizzle.
